One day, while looking through the “Free Times” newspaper in his hometown of Columbia, S.C., a talent show ad caught the eye of up and coming comic Jawan Charley.
Then only 17 years old, Jawan entered what would be his very first competition. He won 3rd place and took home a $50 cash prize. Jawan says the natural high he got from being on the stage led him to pursue comedy as a career.
He went on to study the timing and performance style of his favorite comedian Chris Tucker, along with others who have inspired him – from Redd Foxx and Flip Wilson to Richard Pryor and Robin Harris.
Since then, Jawan has appeared on Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater in New York, the Ha Ha Café in Los Angeles and various other clubs in the South.
